103.3
The shrink-fit toolholders have a round bore which expands upon heating and will clamp the tool when
cooled.
Experience enables SCHAUBLIN to guarantee shrink-fit toolholders of high quality. The SCHAUBLIN
universal shrink-fit toolholders can be used with most heat shrink devices and some induction devices. It
is possible to use all types of carbide tool shanks without problems, and under certain conditions HSS
shanks with or without carbide liner.
Outer shape :
The outer shape of shrink-fit toolholders is designed to ensure optimum rigidity with a mass ideal for
machining. This machining advantage limits the application of cooling machines which depend on the
outer shape of the toolholders. SCHAUBLIN makes no compromise regarding the safety of use and the
lifetime of the machining spindle!
Temperature of the heat treatment shrinking process :
The temperature required for shrink fit function is dependent upon properties of the tool shank. The
closer the diameter is to the upper limit of tolerance, the higher the temperature required. Temperature
range is around 150 to 300°C. On the grooved heated portion, the shrink-fit toolholders should not be
heated over 400°C. Over 250°C, oxidation may occur.
Shrink-fit on HSS tools :
These tools can be heated and cooled under the following condition: The heating time must be very
short to prevent possible deformation of the tool. For more detailed instructions, please contact the
manufacturer of the shrink fit equipment. They will provide suitable information on HSS shrinking.
Tool shank tolerances :
The fit between the shrink-fit toolholders and the tool must be accurately determined in order to transfer
the forces and the torque values during machining. For this reason, the tolerance of the tool shank
should not exceed the following limits: ø4...5: ISO h4 ø6...max: ISO h6.
